Identity Management Day 2023: Identity and Access Management (IAM) for Government
This past Tuesday officially marked Identity Management Day 2023. Hosted by the National Cybersecurity Alliance and the Identity Defined Security Alliance, it is a day of awareness to educate business leaders, IT decision-makers, and the general public about the importance of identity management.
When it comes to government IT, it is also the ideal day to shine a light on the how Identity and Access Management (IAM) is growing in prominence and is a fundamental and critical cybersecurity capability.
In 2021, the Biden administration issued its “Executive Order on Improving the Nation’s Cybersecurity,” where federal agencies need to advance toward Zero Trust Architecture. A key part of this is that agencies need to treat identity protection and IAM as core elements of a strong Zero Trust security foundation.
Last summer, we published a deep-dive article for the Makpar blog titled, “Identity and Access Management (IAM) Taking Hold in the Government Arena.” The article describes IAM as a security framework using products, applications, and platforms to manage identities.
It also highlighted how IAM is adaptive, federated, and integrated, as well as a process as much as it is a technology. It discussed how behavioral biometrics, artificial intelligence, and self-sovereign identity (SSI) will also drive multifactor authentication to new levels in security and introduce new trends in identity management.
One of the themes of Identity Management Day 2023 is that identity security is everyone’s responsibility. In the government arena, the stakes are much higher when it comes to identity security. This is why it is key for agencies to leverage deep IAM knowledge and expertise from trusted industry partners.
Makpar provides support for one of the largest Identity and Access Management Systems deployed in the U.S. Government.
