Advancing AI DevOps with Security in Mind for Government

With advances in AI accelerating the IT development process for government, we are at a critical tipping point where new considerations are needed around building in security from the beginning.

It has become common knowledge that AI-driven tools can automate many of the routine tasks that were previously manual, which can reduce the likelihood of human error and free up time for more complex problem-solving. These tools can also provide predictive analytics for teams anticipating and mitigating potential issues before they become critical.

For many IT developers, in what would take three to four hours to create a virtual cloud for instance, this can now be done in a matter of 20 to 30 minutes. While this certainly creates efficiencies, code can simply be created that is inherently vulnerable. Following are the key components for advancing AI DevOps with security in mind for government:

  • Create a Security Mindset: From the start of an IT development project, make sure that all team members have a true security mindset. This means training all team members to proactively find vulnerabilities at every stage of development.

  • Security at Every Stage:  As highlighted above, IT projects should not advance to the next stage of development unless they have been deemed secure. Once a team advances to the next phase, it’s much more difficult to go back and address any vulnerable code in earlier phases.

  • Keep the Human Element: While everyone talks about the need for the human element in AI, this becomes even more crucial when applied to DevOps. AI can analyze vast amounts of data and identify patterns. However, IT developers need to understand the limitations of AI and not rely solely on its capabilities.

For government agencies, AI DevOps provides a valuable opportunity to accelerate overall IT modernization efforts – for literally any type of IT project. However, it is critical to remember that AI is a powerful tool that needs to be harnessed and managed by humans. Otherwise, security gaps can occur that often go unnoticed and create serious vulnerabilities.

Makpar’s DevSecOps support services address security problems by integrating security into all stages of the software delivery process and use an Agile framework; methodology to manage our projects.
